Maharashtra: Dalit woman beaten and paraded naked

Pune, Jan 12: In a bizarre incident, a 45-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly beaten up and paraded naked at Moolgaon in Patan taluka in Satara district of Maharashtra after her son eloped with a girl from the high-caste.

The victim's son who belongs to the Matang community was having an affair with a girl from an upper caste family and the couple had reportedly disappeared from the village two weeks back.

Sources said that the family of the girl trapped the Dalit woman near a public well, where the victim was fetching water and started asking her questions on the whereabouts of her son. After continuous arguments, they beat her up and paraded her naked through the village. Sources also revealed that the girls family carried out the heinous activity to teach a lesson for her son's act.

Meanwhile, the girls parents have filed a missing complaint. However, the victim had made it clear that she has no knowledge of the couple's elopement.

Police has arrested five people including three woman in connection with the case under Indian Penal Code sections 143, 149 (unlawful assembly), 354 (assault with intention to outrage woman's modesty) and 324 (causing grievous hurt).

The woman sustained severe injuries and was admitted to a hospital. A complaint has been lodged against the girl's family.
