Jayalalithaa submerges Mullaperiyar dam fears with print ads

Chennai, Dec 10: After the Mullaperiyar row is stinging both Kerala and Tamil Nadu hard, TN Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has found new means to drive home the states point. She has released full page ads that proclaims that the Mullaperiyar dam is safe. This ad campaign was released on Friday on in all five major newspapers including 5 newspapers in Malayalam.

Jayalalithaa explained through the ads on how the Mullaperiyar dam was “safe and as good as new”. She added that Mullaperiyar dam which is a gravity dam used their weight to resist water pressure and other external forces such as wave pressure and earthquakes to remain stable.

She made an appeal to people in Kerala to not fall prey to the campaign by divisive forces who are spreading falsehood and alleging that the lives and properties of those living near the dam are in danger. Jayalalithaa has earlier accused the certain forces within Kerala of creating a fear psychosis in people.

She also recalled how Kerala had adopted a legislation in its Assembly to go past the Supreme Court order of Feb 2006 that gave the go ahead to Tamil Nadu to raise the water level in the dam to 142 feet.

Jaya had also slammed certain parties in Kerala of having vested interests by decommissioning the dam. She alleged that land grabbers in Kerala was the most worried since the resorts and other structured built on land originally leased to Tamil Nadu will be completely submerged in water if water level was raised above 136 feet.
