Mullaperiyar: DMK steps up pressure; plans fasts from Dec 12
The DMK has also planned to organize a human chain in five southern districts in Tamil Nadu namely Theni, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul and Sivaganga on Dec 15. These districts are the biggest beneficiaries of the dam water.
M. K. Stalin, DMK treasurer is expected to head the human chain agitation at Theni.
In a rare show of solidarity, the waring political parties of DMK and AIADMK had echoed the same demand for deployment of Central Industrial Security Force to protect the dam. Kerala however maintains its demand for the construction of a new dam.
DMK has also slammed the Centre and the Kerala government for failing to prevent violence perpetrated on Tamilians in Kerala. There were stray incidents of violence on Keralites in Tamil Nadu as well.
The issue is maintaining momentum in Kerala with various social groups and political parties citing that Idukki district where the dam is situated in a seismically active zone. The fact that the Mullaperiyar dam is 116-years-old is also reason to worry.
