TN mass rape: Justice after 20 years, 215 govt men convicted

Chennai, Sept 29: People of Vachathi in Tamil Nadu got justice almost after 20 years when Dharmapuri Principal District Judge S Kumaraguru on Thursday, Sept 29 found 215 government officials guilty in a mass rape case.

215 out of 255 accused have been found guilty. While 9 people have been guilty of rape, 67 were held guilty of committing atrocities against Dalits.

Most of the guilty were government officials who raped 18 women and beat 100 brutally in Vachathi in 1992. Officials from Forest and Police Departments raided the village claiming the villagers hid sandalwood illegally.

In the name of investigation, men and women were dragged out of their houses and were raped and beaten up mercilessly before being taken to the Forest Ranger"s Office in Harur.
