Suicide bomb attacks near Afghan vice-president's residence

Kabul, Aug 19: On Friday, Aug 19 two large suicide bomb blasts in Kabul near the Intercontinental Hotel and the home of Afghanistan's Vice President Mohammad Qasim Fahim rocked the city.

Reportedly, the two heavy explosions were within 10 minutes of each other around 5:45 am (local time) and sporadic gunfire. At the scene was the burning wreckage of a car that had rammed into the wall of an office and exploded. There were ambulances on hand and helicopters overhead.

"There have been two suicide explosions. My boys are engaged I will give more information later," Kabul police chief Ayub Salangi said after an AFP reporter and witnesses reported hearing blasts and gunfire.

According to Siddiq Siddiqui, an interior ministry spokesman, it has been reported that the blasts in the Karte Parwan area might probably be suicide attacks.
