Powerful timed explosive defused in Dhubri town

Dhubri (Assam), Jul 27: A powerful bomb placed at a bus station in Lower Assam's Dhubri town was today (Jul 27) defused by the police which said the explosive, if triggered, could have caused a major disaster on a day the anti-talk faction of the ULFA observes martyr's day.

The Programmable Time Device with three batteries and a switch weighing about 2.5 kg, all wrapped in a blue plastic packet was spotted by a passenger at the bus station near the Dhubri police station at around six am, district SP P C Saloi said.

He immediately informed the police who took the bomb to a safe area and covered it before informing the Army bomb disposal squad in nearby Kokrajhar district. The bomb squad personnel promptly arrived and defused it, Saloi said.

The identity of those responsible would be known only after an investigation, Saloi said.
