US: School girl kidnapped, raped for 18 years

California, Jul 12: A book written by a rape victim, Jaycee Dugard has left the world numb. The revelations by Dugard shocked many when the writer said that she was kidnapped as a school girl at the age of 11 and was continuously raped for 18 years.

The main culprit Phillip and his wife Nancy Garrido kidnapped the victim in 1991 and confined her in a back yard compound. Dugard gave birth to two babies. During an interview with ABC news, Dugard said, "She (Dugard's daughter) was beautiful. I felt like I wasn't alone anymore. (I) had somebody else who was mine...and I know I could never let anything happen to her. I didn't know how I was going to do that, but I did."

Dugard in her book, A Stolen Life, claimed, "Why not look at it (horrible experience of 18 years)? You know, stare it down until it can't scare you anymore. I didn't want there to be any more secrets...I hadn't done anything wrong. It wasn't something I did that caused this to happen. And I feel that by putting it all out there, it's very freeing."

The two culprits have been sent to jail. After long sufferings of continuous 18 years, Dugard was rescued in 2009. The pathetic situation has been described by the victim when she said, "There's a switch that I had to shut off. I mean, I can't imagine being beaten to death. And you can't imagine being kidnapped and raped. So, it's just, you just do what you have to do to survive."
