International Criminal Court orders Gaddafi's arrest

Muammar Gaddafi
Hague, Jun 27: Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi is facing an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. He has been charged under various accounts and will face arrest along with his son, Saif al-Islam and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanussi. He has been accused of perpetrating crimes against humanity to power his seat of power.

The announcement was made on Monday following a warrant request by chief International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo in May, who claimed that the three men were responsible for "widespread and systematic attacks" on civilians. The judges when delivering the arrest warrant said that Gaddafi was instrumental in orchestrating the killing, injuring, arrest and imprisonment of hundreds of civilians during the course of the 12-day uprising that saw him clinging on to power. Gaddafi has been in power since the last four decades.

According to Moreno-Ocampo the court had apparently enough evidence to prove that Col Gaddafi had "personally ordered attacks on unarmed Libyan civilians and was behind the arrest and torture of his political opponents."
