Sachan death: Family refuses to cremate until CBI probe

Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow, Jun 24 : After the mysterious death of deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Yogendra Singh Sachan grabbed the headlines recently, the Mayawati government has another issue to deal with it that is slowly snowballing into something bigger and murkier.

Sachan's brother has been quoted a saying, “Facts are being hidden from us. They are not saying openly that this is a case of murder not suicide, cold blooded murder. Once we get permission for a CBI enquiry we will cremate the body." Expressing their ire at the authorities, the family has made the decision not to conduct the last rites of Sachan unless the government orders a CBI enquiry into the matter.

After his autopsy report also indicated chances of murder, rather than suicide, the Opposition parties have highlighted the fact and slammed the rampant instances of lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh. But it is Sachan's family members who have been caught in the middle of the controversy and is seeking justice from authorities.

Sachan was in jail after being accused of plotting the murder of two CMOs. It was in the district jail hospital's unused toilet that he was found dead. He was found hanging. With the police and the government stressing that he had committed suicide, there are others who are crying foul. The autopsy report also backed their claims, when it revealed nine wounds caused by a weapon. A blade was found near the dead body.

As an immediate face-saving effort, Mayawati had ordered the suspension of five staff members of the Lucknow district jail.
