Shahid Balwa accused of smuggling phone into Tihar jail

New Delhi, Jun 13: Looks like there is more trouble in store for Shahid Balwa, one of the 2G spectrum accused who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. After being slammed two days ago by the special CBI court for filing "frivolous" pleas to visit Mumbai to attend the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of their company, the court slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 on both the Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa and DB Realty's Vinod Goenka.

Yet another accusation has emerged against Balwa following an internal investigation by Tihar Jail authorities. They seized a mobile phone from Rajiv Aggarwal, another person accused in the telecom scam. It was found that the phone originally belonged to Shahid Balwa.

The Blackberry phone was seized on May 21 from Aggarwal who is the Director of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables. It is believed that he tried to smuggle the phone on his way back to jail after a court hearing. A probe was launched by the Tihar Jail superintendent that later revealed the phone to be Balwa's.

After this breach of the high-security confines of Tihar jail, Aggarwal was shifted from Jail no. 1 to Jail no. 4 and reprimanded. He was also penalized for the act by not letting him meet his family members in jail. He was lodged in the same cell as Balwa and former telecom minister A Raja before being moved out.
