Quake hits NE Japan, tsunami alert issued
The country's meteorological agency informed that the quake hit around 11:45 local time ot 0245 GMT.
The agency has also issued a tsunami alert of up to 50 cm for the region. Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that the focus of the quake was 6 miles below the surface of the earth, off the coast of Aomori prefecture.
Japan is located on one of the world's most seismically active areas and it accounts for more than one-fifth of the world's earthquake of magnitude 6 or more.
