Rs 15 lakh penalty slap to Rahat under Customs Act

New Delhi, Feb 20: A penalty of Rs 15 lakh each under the Customs Act have been imposed on Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his manager Maroof, sources informed today (Sunday, Feb 20).

The duo, who have been charged under the Foreign Exchange Management Act and Customs Act, can leave the country only after paying the penalty.

Last week, Rahat and his 16-member troupe were detained at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport over allegedly carrying $1.24 lakh (about Rs. 60 lakh) of undeclared foreign currency.

According the customs rule, anyone, who is carrying beyond $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in other instruments while travelling by air, has to declare the amount to the Customs Department.
