More than 50 illegal migrants drown off the coast of Mozambique
PALMA, MOZAMBIQUE: More than 50 illegal immigrants were killed last week when a boat carrying nearly 130 people sank off the northeastern coast of Mozambique, according to local media reports on Wednesday.
The local Imensis news portal said the boat carrying 129 illegal migrants was on its way from Somalia to Mozambique when it sank near Palma, a town on the Indian Ocean coast of Mozambique near Tanzania. A total of 51 people were killed, including the captain of the ship.
According to police spokesman Pedro Cossa, as cited by Imensis, 89 of the passengers were Somali while the others were Ethiopians. The survivors were sent to a refugee center in Nampula Province.
Other details were not immediately released.
