UN envoy says Pak backs reconciliation bid for peace and stability in Afghanistan

New York, Feb 14(ANI): Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, has said that his country supports an Afghan-led reconciliation process in Afghanistan to pave the way for durable peace and stability in the war-torn country.

"Pakistan wants durable peace and stability in Afghanistan," the Daily Times quoted Haroon, as saying, while participating in a discussion panel at the United Nations on the subject of "Afghanistan: Is a Negotiated Settlement Possible".

"Development in Afghanistan is in our national interest," he added.

Haroon further stressed that Pakistan had welcomed the establishment of "the High-level Peace Council" in Afghanistan.

He also informed that the peace council's head, Burhanuddin Rabbani, had visited Islamabad last month.

The event was organized by the Century Foundation and Mid-Atlantic region of the United Nations Association of the United States.

Other participants were former United States Ambassador to Afghanistan Robert Finn and Afghanistan's UN Ambassador Zahir Tanin. (ANI)
