Diplomat Anil Verma a serial wife-basher?

New Delhi, Jan 28: When we thought that domestic violence and abuse was confined to the lower strata of society, Anil Verma's case was much of an eye-opener. The diplomat who is now facing the music for his wife-bashing case has a dark history behind him.

News is out that he has a notorious reputation of domestic abuse under his belt. An FIR was filed in 1989 by Verma's first wife on charges of physical and mental abuse. He was apparently arrested then in lieu of the criminal charges filed against him by his wife. She attributed dowry harassment as the cause of the abuse.

"My husband reduced me to such a state that I started thinking suicide was the only option left to me. He used anger, threat, ridicule, humiliation and violence as weapons on me," the FIR said. The FIR also named Anil Verma's parents and sisters as accused.

The case was later withdrawn following a mutual divorce agreement by both parties.

Anil Verma is in the eye of a storm following a wife-bashing case that came to light in London. His wife, Paromita Verma was seeking asylum in London and was on the run after Anil Verma misused his diplomatic stature.
