Murdered Indian-origin bride's sister wants husband to stand trial in SA, prove his innocence
London, Jan 25 (ANI): The sister of Anni Dewani, the Indian-origin bride killed during her honeymoon in Cape Town last year, has said that her brother-in-law should not have any problem to stand trial in South Africa if he is innocent.
Shrien Dewani had failed to attend the extradition hearing at Westminster Magistrate's Court in London last week citing depression and 'acute stress' as a major problem that he is finding difficult to overcome. The hearing was adjourned until February 8.
South African police believe that he had masterminded his wife's murder.
The Telegraph quoted Anni's sister Ami Denborg as saying that Dewani should speak the "truth" about what exactly led to her sister's death.
"If he (Mr Dewani) hasn't done it, if he's innocent, then he should go back and identify the killers and tell us what happened in the court," the paper quoted Denborg, as saying.
"Please tell us the truth of what happened and clear your name in court in South Africa. Tell us all this evidence that the South African police have, please explain to us what it is and what the truth is," she added.
Twenty-eight-year-old Anni from Sweden was shot dead when the taxi the couple were travelling in was hijacked in the Gugulethu township on the outskirts of Cape Town on November 13 last year. Shrien was set free unharmed.
Dewani, a businessman from Bristol, is facing charges of conspiracy to murder, murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravated circumstances and obstruction of the administration of justice.ast week Hasmukh Shah, a close friend of Dewani, had said that Shrien would consider returning to South Africa under certain conditions, including being given bail up to the point of final appeal, and given freedom of movement to help him build his defence case.
The couple's taxi driver Zola Tongo had turned state witness on the condition that sentence be reduced, and alleged that Dewani had paid him 1,400 pound for having his wife killed in South Africa. (ANI)
