Irregularities in CWG projects to be scrutinised by Par panel

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) The alleged irregularitiescommitted in the Commonwealth Games projects will come underthe scrutiny of a Parliamentary panel when it grills topofficials of the Urban Development Ministry on the issue.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on UrbanDevelopment has called top officials from the ministry tobrief it on the role and performance of various agencies underit in implementing the Games-related projects.

The Committee, headed by JD-U leader Sharad Yadav,will also look into the alleged irregularities committed bythe agencies including CPWD and DDA in implementing theprojects during its meeting on January 18.

"The Secretary, Urban Development, will also bepresent to put across the stand of the ministry on the issueof irregularities," said a member of the 32-member Committee.

The Prime Minister-appointed V K Shunglu Committee,the Enforcement Directorate, the CBI and the CVC are alreadylooking into the various irregularities detected in the run upto the Games.

The CAG is also likely to complete its report on CWGirregularities by the end of this month.

As the Urban Development Ministry was the nodal agencyfor monitoring and execution of Games projects in the city,its minister S Jaipal Reddy was made the chairman of theEmpowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) to ensure speedyimplementation of various projects ahead of the Games.

But despite a variety of mechanisms, several projectsfailed to meet deadlines repeatedly leading to a chaoticsituation.

CPWD and DDA -- working under the control of theMinistry -- were slammed for the slow pace of progress as wellas the quality of construction at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadiumand Games Village respectively.
