Roman court annuls marriage as wife 'thought about having an affair'

London, Nov 10 (ANI): Italian judges annulled a marriage yesterday because the wife had merely thought of having an affair.

The Cassation Court, Italy's highest, backed the decision a lower church court in the city of Modena, to dissolve the marriage even though the woman had never actually been unfaithful, reports the Daily Mail.

According to court sources, both the husband and wife told judges that she had often "thought about" the idea that a marriage did not have to be based on sexual fidelity. However, she had made it clear that she had never put the idea into practice.

But the admission that she had merely considered an extra-marital affair was considered sufficient by the judges in Rome to decisively back the annulment, which had already been confirmed by the regional appeal court in Bologna.

"We fully support the lower court's findings even though there was no evidence of the woman frequenting other men," they declared in the landmark ruling.

They said that because the woman had effectively said her promise of a "good marriage" was no longer certain and because her husband was aware of this, the ties were dissolved.

After the ruling, the leading Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera wrote, "Beware those of you who show any libertine thoughts.

"This supreme court sentence sends a threatening cloud over anyone who admits to post-nuptial thoughts of infidelity." (ANI)
