London, Nov 02 (ANI): Security has been stepped up around French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni after Greek police seized a letter bomb which was sent to him.

Anti-terrorist police in Athens intercepted an explosive device wrapped in brown paper that was addressed to the Elysee Palace in Paris.

It was one of a number of booby-trapped devices addressed to embassies in Belgium, Holland and Mexico.

"It's a worrying development, and clearly everything is being done to improve security around Mr Sarkozy and his family," the Daily Mail quoted a presidential source as saying.

"The security threat remains high and nobody can take any chances.reek police confirmed that the bomb addressed to the Mexican embassy in Athens exploded, slightly injuring a post office worker," the presidential source added.

Disposal experts destroyed all the other devices, including the one sent to Sarkozy.

An investigation has been launched, with the initial focus of enquiry on Greek nationalists.

It comes after Sarkozy, who is of Greek and Hungarian descent, said he feared he is so disliked that he could be the target of an assassination plot.

Not only has his government defied trade unions and the Socialist opposition in France by raising the retirement age from 60 to 62, but there have also been terrorist threats.

Sarkozy told aides that "someone may just cross the line and attack me". (ANI)
