Double disaster of tsunami, volcano hits Indonesia

Indonesia
Jakarta, Oct 27: Double disaster has struck Indonesia with a earthquake triggering off a tsunami and a volcano eruption leading to scores of deaths in a span of two days.

The Oct 25 7.7-magnitude earthquake triggered off a massive tsunami that has left over 100 people dead.

The 3m-high wave crashed into the Mentawai islands. Rescue teams are battling against odds such as bad weather and aftershocks from the quake to reach over 500 people estimated missing after the tsunami.

Adding to the tragedy, Mount Merapi volcano erupted on Tuesday, Oct 27. Official figures put the volcano death toll at 25. Even though the ash levels has subsided, fears of fresh eruptions haunts the region.

While thousands have already fled from the nearby villages, few refused to leave, triggering of fears that the death toll is bound to rise.

Indonesia happens to be one of the world's most active areas for earthquakes and volcanoes.
