Pak by-polls: 14 dead, 40 injured in violence

Islamabad, Oct 17: Following a contesting party's announcement that it would boycott Pakistan upcoming by-polls over improper security issue, violence spread in Karachi in which 14 people were dead and 40 were injured.

The political party, Awami National Party announced it would boycott the election as its demand for proper security and deployment of the army had not been met by the government.

Police sources informed that the agitators torched vehicles and forced shopkeepers and restaurant owners to close down their businesses on Oct 17.

The polls for the provincial assembly seat PS-94 was seen as a direct contest between the Mutthaida-e-Qaumi Movement which represents the Urdu speaking population of the city and the ANP which represents the Pasthun speaking migrants.
