SL Prez to be guest at CWG closing ceremony

London, Oct 12: Coming close to the end of the Commonwealth Games 2010, Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will join Prince Edward as the guest of honour at the closing ceremony on Wednesday, Oct 13.

Despite his controversies over the failure to protect thousands of civilians who lost thier lives in the civil war with Tamil separatists in 2009, he willing accepted a "joint" invitation from the Indian government and the event organisers.

Sources said his presence at the ceremony may spark anger from Tamil campaigners who have accused Rajapaksa in the long battle. They have also expresses outraged for inviting Rajapaksa as guest of honour.

Meanwhile, Head of protocol for the Commonwealth Games, Aslam Khan, confirmed that the choice of guest for the closing ceremony was a "joint venture between the Indian Government and the organising committee."
