New discovery paves way for treatment to protect women from IVF dangers
London, Oct 3 (ANI): Scientists at Middlesex University have discovered a potentially deadly complication of fertility treatment.
The team has identified the genetic abnormality that causes Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome, which affects up to a third of the 40,000 women undergoing IVF each year.
"We believe we have found the molecular mechanism behind this condition which will rapidly lead to diagnosis and treatment of women at risk," the Daily Express quoted Professor Ray Iles, who led the research, as saying.
Many of the cases are mild, causing abdominal pain and bloating - but OHSS can kill.
It is believed the syndrome occurs when IVF drugs cause high levels of the chemical adenosine, which is neutralised with a naturally occurring enzyme. (ANI)
