Hurricane Earl moves towards Caribbean islands

Miami, Aug 30: Hurricane Earl, which has strengthened to a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of near 100 miles per hour (160 kph) as of Sunday, Aug 29 evening, is now making its way towards the popular tourist islands of the Caribbean.

According to the US National Hurricane Center, Earl was about 130 miles (215 km) east of St Martin and moving west-northwest.

Advisories alerting of high winds and other hurricane conditions within 24 hours have been issued across islands such as Antigua, St Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands and St Maarten.

The hurricane centre has predicted that Earl would become a major hurricane by late Monday, Aug 30.
