I am Indian, says Anand, accepts Sibal's apology

New Delhi, Aug 25: Indian chess Grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion, Viswanathan Anand, accepted Human Resource Department (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal"s apology over the controversy on conferring an honorary doctorate to him.

"I am an Indian. I was trained in Spain but always retained my Indian passport. I accept HRD minister Kapil Sibal"s apology, will accept the doctorate," said Anand.

On Tuesday, Aug 24 media reported that Anand was denied the honour proposed by the University of Hyderabad after the HRD Ministry raised questions over his nationality.

Later HRD Minister Kapil Sibal apologised to him and told that there was no issue over Anand's nationality.

"I told him that the honorary degree could be conferred today itself. He indicated to me that he had some problem about this Tuesday, Aug 24 evening. Then I told him any date of his convenience for the function was okay. He has accepted it," said Kapil Sibal during the press conference.
