Honour Indian freedom fighters:US Congress woman

Washington, Aug 12: A senior US Congresswoman said Americans should honour freedom fighters of India who led the country freed from hardships against the British rule.

"Madam Speaker, I rise today to commemorate August 15th as Indian Independence Day -- a day for all Americans to honour the hardships and sacrifices that paved the road to Indian freedom," Republican Congresswoman Judy Biggert said in her speech on the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Aug 10.

Biggert has many reasons to celebrate as her birthday falls on the same day 10 years before India achieved its independence.

"Madam Speaker, let us join with Americans of Indian origin from across the country to celebrate Indian Independence Day and take this opportunity to appreciate the rich culture, traditions and history that have contributed so much to the United States of America," she said.
