Chennai, June 7 (ANI): In order to revive the dying crafts of northeastern states, a bamboo exhibition is currently going on in Chennai.

On the first day of the exhibition, over 100 craftsmen from the northeastern states are displaying their products.

The exhibition is being held by the All India Handicrafts Exhibitions in collaboration with North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation which aim to raise awareness about bamboo and cane handicrafts and improve the livelihood of the craftsmen.

"Northeastern part of the country is full of hilly terrain. Bamboo raw material is easily available there so prices are also quite cheap.

"The main livelihood of the northeastern people is from handicraft and little bit of handloom. 80 per cent of the craft is from the bamboo and other 20 percent comes as dry flowers, wood carving etc. Bamboo's plenty, products are eco friendly, liked by people," said D. C. Boroktoky, General Manager, north eastern handicrafts and handlooms development corporation.

Products on display like Bamboo furniture, lamps, showpieces, wall hangings, ornaments, household items, and decorative tribal weapons.

"This exhibition is very useful. It is all under one roof so it is convenient for us to bring our families and shop around here. Rates are also very cheap," said Shobana, a visitor.

Northeast India is also called the 'home of bamboo'. Around 70 percent of rural workers are directly dependant on bamboo for a living. (ANI)
