Pakistan takes off ban on YouTube

Islamabad, May 27: Pakistan has lifted the ban on the video-sharing website Youtube but informed that the links with the objectionable images and contents including blasphemous caricatures, will continue to be blocked.

The Pak internet service providers restored the access to the website late on Wednesday, May 26 evening after the Information and Technology Ministry lifted the ban on Youtube.

Youtube was blocked six days ago after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) began complaining about the 'sacrilegious' content being published on the website.

PTA also blocked social networking website Facebook for hosting a page which promoted a contest to draw blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Mohammed, according to the order of the Lahore High Court.

Around 800 URLs, leading to the 'sacrilegious' content, have been blocked by the internet service providers across the country.

The ban on Facebook by the Lahore High Court, prevails till May 31.
