Burqa ban not to hurt Muslims: French President
Paris, May 20:French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that Muslims should not feel 'stigmatised' or 'hurt' by the planned ban on burquas, after the French Cabinet approved a draft law to bar the traditional veil from public areas.
"It is a decision one does not take lightly," said the President. "I"m thinking in particular of our Muslim compatriots, who have their place in the republic and should feel respected," he added.
“We are an old nation united around a certain idea of human dignity, and in particular of a woman"s dignity, around a certain idea of how to live together. The full veil that hides the face completely harms those values, which are so fundamental to us, so essential to the republican compact," reported Telegraph as Mr Sarkozy as saying.
The nation experienced the protests related to the veil-ban as many think the new law as 'useless and dangerous'.
