Iran bans Gmail; to launch state-run email site
Washington, Feb 11: Even as the China-Google war is yet to die down, the US search engine has been slapped with another ban by Iran and this time its on its email site 'Gmail', a newspaper report said.
It has been said that Iran is all set to launch a state-run email service similar to Gmail to 'build trust between the citizen and the government'.
The impact of the announcement of the decision by Iran"s telecommunications agency on Gmail is unclear.
The ban on Gmail came as part of the government's insecurity towards the opposition making use of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to stay connected with the youth.
Gmail is reportedly the most popular Western mail service in Iran, particularly among the youth.
Meanwhile, there has been no comment from Google on the ban.
