Cabinet Committee on Prices meeting extended till Wednesday

New Delhi, Jan 12 (ANI): The Cabinet Committee on Prices (CCP) meeting that was held on Tuesday to discuss the issue of spiralling food prices including sugar prices, was postponed till Wednesday morning.

Reports said as no solution could be reached during Tuesday's meeting, so it was decided to hold the meeting on Wednesday.

Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had earlier said sugar production has been low and the government has consequently decided to import about 40 lakh tons of raw sugar.

Around two million tons of sugar have already arrived in the country and are being processed, he had added.

There are reports that the Centre may extend the deadline for import of duty-free white sugar beyond March 31 to augment domestic supply and curb the rising price.

The minister had said on Monday that prices could rise further, prompting the Congress to downplay his remarks. Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi had said, " All efforts are being taken to contain prices."

The cabinet meet comes in the wake of the BJP's decision to go on a countrywide campaign on prices from January 18. (ANI)
