Sudan: Girl gets 50 lashes for 'indecent' skirt
Cairo, Nov 28: In another incident of moral policing, a 16-year-old high school girl from south Sudan was flogged 50 times for wearing skirt by authorities in the north which was considered indecent.
"I was treated like a criminal. My skirt was beneath the knee. What more can I do? I am Christian. My tribe and my customs permit me to dress like this," said Silva Kashif, who was arrested in Khartoum market.
She was convicted of offending public morality and flogged 50 times.
Reacting to the sentencing of Kashif, Al-Haj, the human rights lawyer said that they will protest against the sentencing of Khasif and will demand the questioning of authorities who allowed the ordeal to take place.
Earlier, Lubna Hussein, a female journalist was sentenced to 40 lashes for wearing trousers in public which was considered immodest under Islamic law.
Northern Sudan follows strict Islamic laws which prescribes ban on alcohol, prevents public meeting of male and female members and breaking up of parties.
