Global warming: Maldives cabinet meets underwater
Male, Oct 17: In a record setting way to gain international attention to the threats of global warning, Maldives cabinet dressed in scuba gear met 16 feet underwater and signed a document calling for global cuts in carbon emissions.
President Mohamed Nasheed and his cabinet spent as much as half hour underwater communicating through hand signals and with white boards.
Officials of the cabinet who did admit that the meeting was 'fun', however, asserted that it was for a serious cause.
The cabinet members had to go through prior training to achieve this. While three out of the 14 cabinet ministers could not make it due to medical reasons, the others had been practising their slow breathing to get into the right mental frame for the meeting, say reports.
After a practice exercise on Friday, Oct 16, the cabinet ministers splashed into the blue-green lagoon on a small island used for military training on Saturday, Oct 17 for the world's first underway cabinet meeting.
