Kuala Lumpur, Oct 8 (ANI): A Malay beauty pageant contender has revealed that she is very excited to wear a saree for the competition, and hopes her act will encourage others to wear the attire.

University student Suguna Tan Sui Mei, 20, who is among the finalists of the annual Deepavali Saree Queen contest, said she decided to take part in the competition following encouragement from family and friends.

"It is very exciting to be part of the competition. I hope the competition will encourage younger women from the community to don the traditional wear," the Star Online quoted her as saying.

Twelve contestants will be vying for the 25th annual contest organised by the Malacca Indian Association (MIA).

MIA president Datuk Dr N. Athimulum said the association hoped to raise more than RM60,000 from the event.

"We will channel the money, minus the organising cost, to local community projects and charities," he added.

An estimated 600 guests are expected to turn up for the finals on October 10 at Dewan Hang Tuah. (ANI)
