Man slapped with £50 fine for dropping £10 note on street!
London, June 11 (ANI): A man has been accused of littering and slapped with a 50-pound fixed-penalty notice for dropping a 10-pound note in the street by accident.
Arthritis sufferer Stewart Smith, from Dalrymple, Ayrshire, was leaving a charity shop when the banknote unwittingly fell from his hand.
The 36-year-old initially thanked the two officers who approached him to point out that the note had fallen to the ground.
However, moments later, after recovering the note, he was shocked to be accused of littering and slapped with a fine.
Smith, who was forced to give up work because of his illness, receives just 98 pounds a fortnight in benefits. However, the former warehouse worker has just 14 days to pay up or could face further action.
It is believed that the police were executing a zero-tolerance approach to littering as part of a concerted effort to clean up their local area in Ayr.
Smith has now sought legal advice and is hoping to have the fine overturned.
"I will be taking up this matter on his behalf. This is a scandalous use of police resources," the Daily Express quoted his solicitor Peter Lockhart as saying. (ANI)
