India sends relief materials to Sri Lanka

New Delhi, Apr 30 (ANI): With a view to help civilians displaced from their homes due to the ongoing war in Sri Lanka, India on Thursday handed over a consignment of 40,000 individually packed family sets of humanitarian relief material to the island nation.

India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Alok Prasad personally handed over the relief material to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is distributing the relief material in the no-fire zone.

The consignment includes 900 metric tons of assorted food items, personal hygiene products, and clothing articles.

The quantity of food items covers the needs of 40,000 families.

Human Rights and Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Samarsinghe has informed that the United Nations and Sri Lankan government will hold a meeting on May 4 to discuss the needs of the civilians in the war struck nation.

Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona said Colombo is grateful to India for doubling the capacity of the Field hospital in Pulmoddai and informed that the hospital will soon be shifting closer to the IDP camps.

India has expressed grave concern over the plight of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka and called for an immediate end to the war. (ANI)
