Chennai, Apr 18: The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi has asked the UPA government to cut all the diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka if it fails to heed India's appeal to ceasefire in the country.

Karunanidhi sent a telegram to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday, Apr 17. He has expressed solidarity with Mukherjee's earlier statement asking Sri Lanka to ceasefire for the benefit of the civilians trapped in the embattled zone and said that if the appeal is unheeded by the island country then India must break all ties with the neighbour.

''We welcome with gratitude the appeal made by the external affairs minister for ceasefire in Sri Lanka. If the appeal for ceasefire is not honoured and implemented by the Sri Lanka government, we request the government of India to snap all diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka,'' he said in the telegram.
