Assam DGP assures ample security for peaceful polls

Guwahati, Apr 9 (ANI): Assam Director General of Police G M Srivastava said that there are enough security forces to ensure fair and peaceful conduct of the ensuing polls in the state.

"The forces that have been given to us, they have been distributed. There is enough force for manning the elections," said Srivastava.

The top brass clarified that the state has been adequately provided police personnel by the Central Government for the successful conduct of elections to thwart mischief makers and militant outfits.

He asked people not to feel demoralised after the recent spate of bomb blasts.

Reportedly, certain militants of Dima Halam Daogah outfit had ambushed a convoy of the observers of the Election Commission in Assam's North Cachar Hills district.

The militants fired from hilltops as the vehicles of poll observer A P Singh and his team passed.

However, the police sources clarified that neither anyone was injured nor any of the vehicles damaged since there was vast distance between the convoy and the militants.Earlier, just prior to the scheduled visit to state by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, two bomb blasts killed nearly ten persons in Guwahati on Monday.

Police suspected the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) behind the attacks.

Last week, a bomb blast killed one person in Guwahati, close to where External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, was due to address an election rally. Later, the rally was cancelled. (ANI)
