Supreme Court refers negative voting case to larger bench
New Delhi, Feb 23 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday referred the question of whether a voter should be permitted to cast a negative vote during elections to a larger branch.
A bench comprises of Justices B. N. Agarwal and G. S. Singhvi, requested Chief Justice to refer the matter to a larger bench as the question involved the interpretation of a citizen's fundamental right.
A Non-governmental organization (NGO), People Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), approached the apex court seeking directions to the Centre to ensure amendment to the Representation of People's act (RPA).
With this amendment, a voter could mark 'none of the above' in the electronic voting machine.
Presently, if a voter does not want to cast his or her vote in favour of any candidate, he or she should mandatorily inform the presiding officer of the polling booth. (ANI)
