India urges Sri Lanka, LTTE to stop war
New Delhi, Feb 22: India urged the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to stop military action and find a political solution to their dispute. On Friday, Feb 22 the Lankan army shot down two LTTE aeroplanes flying a defiant air raid on Colombo.
Pranab Mukherjee, the acting Prime Minister of India raised concern over the safety of Sri Lankan Tamil population who have been caught in the crossfire. India requested Lanka to ensure their safety. He said that 1987 treat signed by the Sri Lanka and India could help in bringing peace to the island nation
The Tamil rebels have been fighting since 1983 for a separate and independent state for the Tamils for decades alleging the marginalisation by the Sinhalese majority. Over 70,000 people are killed in the ongoing fight so far.
