70 killed in China coal mine blast

Shanghai, Feb 22: More than 70 people were killed in a gas explosion in a coal mine in China on Sunday, Feb 22. The incident occurred at about 2:00 am Chinese time at the Tunlan Coal Mine of Shanxi Coking Coal Group in Gujiao City, near the provincial capital of Taiyuan.

Atleast 436 people were reportedly working underground at the time of the blast. Shanxi Coking Coal Group is one of the largest coking coal producers in China. Tunlan Coal Mine produces 5 million tonnes of coking coal annually. In 2008 alone more than 3,000 people died in mine accidents in China.
