India, Kazakhistan sign civil nuclear deal

New Delhi, Jan 24: External Affairs Minister, Pranab Mukherjee and Kazakh President NursultanNazarbayev in presence of President Pratibha Patil, signed five agreements including one on civil nuclear energy on Saturday, Jan 24.

Nazarbayev arrived on Friday, Jan 23, four days ahead of Republic Day, where he will the Chief Guest.

Apart from the civil nuclear energy deal signed between the Nuclear Power Corp of India (NCPI) and Kazakh nuclear major National Co KazAtomProm, the two countries signed on the dotted line on an extradition treaty, a pact on cooperation in space activities, a protocol in the accession of Kazakhstan to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and a deal between oil majors ONGC Mittal Energy (OMEL) and Kazakhstan's National Co KazmunaiG (KMG).

Pranab Mukherjee has officiated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's absence as he is undergoing a coronary bypass surgery at AIIMS.
