TN govt asks for Central team to assess damage

Chennai, Nov 27 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government today appealed to the Centre to depute a Central team to the state to assess the damages and recommend financial assistance to the people affected by the unpercedented rains under the influence of a cyclonic storm ''Nisha''.

A fax was sent to the Centre in this regard as per the instructions of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, a release here said.

It added that during the last few days, the cyclone had devastated various districts, especially in coastal region.

As per current details, lakhs of people in 58 blocks and 1,380 revenue villages were hit.

Thousands of houses and huts, besides roads and hundreds of bridges, were damaged in the rains, it said.

Stating that there was large scale loss of lives and cattle in the state, it said standing paddy crops in lakhs of acres of land were submerged in rain water.
