Pondy region in 'eye' of storm, death toll rises

Puducherry, Nov 27 (UNI) The death toll in rain-related incidents rose to eight in the Union Territory with one more death reported here today.

According to police, Rajamal(58), a fisherwoman of Vambakeerappalayam, died here after she was unable to bear cold weather.

Meanwhile,rainfall continued to lash Puducherry and it's suburbs under the influence of Cyclone 'Nisha' which crossed Karaikal this morning.

According to reports reaching the state headquarters from Karaikal, the cyclone uprooted a large number of trees and steps were being taken to remove them.

Puducherry Revenue Minister Malladi Krishna Rao, along with Revenue Secretary was supervising relief operations in Karaikal.

Meanwhile, people in different areas put up road blockades demanding pumping out of rainwater from their areas and to protest the non-availability of power since last afternoon.
