PT leader attacked, police use force to quell mob

Madurai, Nov 3 (UNI) Police used mild force to disperse an unruly mob that attacked the convoy of Dalit leader and Puthiya Tamilagam (PT) Founder-President K Krishnasamy at Elumalai Village, about 55 km, from here last night, police sources said today.

They said Dr Krishnasamy was returning from Uthapuram, a communally-sensitive village, after conducting an on-the-spot study about the recent caste violence in the aftermath of the demolition of the infamous 'wall' that segregated a Dalit colony from the caste Hindus when he was attacked by an armed gang.

Trouble started when PT cadre allegedly used objectionable words against the majority community leading to clash between the villagers and the party workers.

In the violence, a police sub-inspector suffered bleeding injuries on his forehead when a stone hit him.

Several people were reportedly injured in the violence. Four vehicles of PT were damaged.

On information, additional police forces rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control after resorting to mild force.

Police escorted Dr Krishnasamy to a safer place and he escaped unhurt in the attack.

A large number of policemen, including armed police, were deployed in and around Uthapuram and Elumalai Villages to prevent further trouble.

Sensing police action, most of the men in the Elumalai Village had gone underground, the sources added.
