SP burns Mayawati in effigy as protest across UP
Lucknow, Oct 27 (UNI) The Samajwadi Party (SP) today burnt Chief Minister Mayawati in effigy in several villages across the state to protest the police action upon peaceful party demonstrators during its three-day-long agitation called 'Ghera Dalo, Dera Dalo' recently.
SP state unit working president Shivpal Singh Yadav while addressing media said here as many as 50,000 effigies of Ms Mayawati were set afire in villages, towns and even the cities against the detention of a large number of party workers during the 'Ghera Dalo Dera Dalo' agitational programme which concluded on October 23.
The SP leader, alleged lathi-charge upon the activists and also complained of their detention in large numbers during the effigy burning agitation in UP.
He claimed that altogether 200 SP activists were detained in Sonebhadra district, while as many as 150 protestors were detained in Bareilly and Mirzapur district each. In Deoaria and Kushinagar, 100 activists were held at each place, followed by 30 in Varanasi and 10 each in Aligarh and Pratapgarh districts.
In Lucknow, the effigy of Ms Mayawati was burnt at the busy Parivatan Chowk in the presence of party district president Ashok Yadav, Jagdeep Yadav, Mohammad Shahid, Shiv Kumar Yadav, Jalim Yadav and others.
Mr Yadav said they had called the protest over lodging of fake cases against 41 party workers, including MLA from Jhansi Deepak Yadav, by the ''corrupt'' Mayawati regime.
