Four students injured in police firing in Bihar violence
Patna/Sasaram, Oct 22 (UNI) At least four students were injured today when police opened fire to disperse a violent mob at Sasaram as they were protesting the recent assault on Bihari students by MNS activists and resorting to vandalism.
However, unconfirmed reports said one of the seriously injured students, who was rushed to nearby Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, succumbed to his wounds, while the condition of another injured student, also rushed to Varanasi, was reported to be serious.
The other two students were undergoing treatment at a local hospital at Sasaram.
Police said an angry mob of students assembled at Sasaram railway station this morning and ransacked the ticket booking office and the reservation counter. The mob also set ablaze many important documents.
Police first resorted to lathicharge to ward off the agitating students, but when the latter were not pacified, they opened fire, injuring four students.
The students also pelted with stones on policemen in which 12 sustained injuries and were admitted to nearby hospital.
As the violence spread to the adjoining areas, the shopkeepers downed their shutters out of fear.
Senior police officials, who rushed to the spot, were still campaing at the site.
The situation was reported to be tense, but under control.
Incidentally, Pawan Kumar, a student from Nalanda district, who went to Mumbai to appear in the railway examination, was killed in the brutal attack of the MNS activists on Sunday last.
