Hindu Editor-in-Chief condemn attack on its newspaper offices

Chennai, Oct 16 (UNI) The Hindu management today condemned the attack on its newspaper offices at Erode and Coimbatore two days ago and urged the Tamil Nadu Government to take stringent action against the culprits involved in it.

In a statement here, The Hindu Editor-in-Chief N Ram urged the Government and the State police to take stronger action under the law of land against the extremist fringe outfits and the individuals involved in this illegal act.

Mr Ram said pro-LTTE fringe outfits calling itself as ''Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam'' along with anti-social elements were involved in the attack.

He said though the Hindu Management was satisfied with the response of the police, such criminal acts posed threat to the physical safety of its journalists, non-journalists and staffs working in the organisation.

''Such incidents also posed a threat to the freedom of expression as guaranteed under Article 19(1) of the Constitution'', he added.

Mr Ram also demanded exemplary punishment to those who menace freedom of expression while espousing the cause of a banned terrorist organisation.
