BMC to built memorial for 1857 heroes

Mumbai, Oct 13 (UNI) On completion of 150 years of the 1857 first war of Independence, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will built a memorial for two heroes of the revolt, near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) here.

Addressing newspersons today, BMC Standing Committee chairman Ravindra Waikar said ''To commemorate the contribution of Mangal Gadiya and Sayed Hussain, who were gunned down by Britishers near the Azad Maidan during the war, we have decided to built a ''Amar Jawanjyot'' on a 400 sq meters area near CST from Member of Parliament fund of Bharat Kumar Raut. The memorial would cost about Rs 25 lakh'', he said.

Mr Waikar said the Corporation had approved Akshardham Temple Trust's proposal to construct two gates -- ''Ganesh'' and ''Davi-Gate'' at Dadar Chaupatti. The Trust will soon submit plan and designs of the gates, he said.

Mr Waikar said the gates will consist of one lakh Ganesh idols, adding the cost of construction and maintenance would be met by the Trust.
