Lowest crime in Kargil and Drass

Kargil, Oct 9: Despite infiltration by labourers and potters from different states of the country and Nepal, Kargil and Drass in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir remained almost crime free.

Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia has so far not reported any murder or major crime case.

However, due to the infiltration by outside labourers, there are some minor incidents of clash and theft, according to official records.

The records show that in Kargil against 23 FIRs registered last year, only 14 were lodged this year so far.

Majority of these cases were about road accidents on the Srinagar-Drass-Kargil highway.

The graph of small crime during 2003-04 had increased because of presence of labourers and potters from other states and Nepal.

However, still the crime rate was lowest, a senior police officer said.

He said in Drass with the active participation and help from the general people, the crime rate was reduced and in this year only 70 FIRs were registered for minor crimes against 120 last year.

The officer said despite internet and other exposure, people in Kargil and Drass are very innocent and hate crime.
